Tracy Austin Gives Backhand To Over-Bearing Sports Parents

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Tracy Austin may be a former child tennis star, but that doesn’t mean she demands the same sort of excellence in sports from her own children.

The mother of three young boys believes being “balanced” and “well-rounded” in life is more important than “making it” in any professional sport as a child.

In her words, “It’s great to have dreams, it’s great to go after them, but we all need to have some balance as well.”

Austin’s view is probably influenced by the way her parents treated her.

She says they were always “very supportive” but never pushed too hard, adding she always felt like one of the couple’s five kids and not a child prodigy.

While Austin admits it’s good for “sports parents” to encourage their children to succeed, it should be the kid’s desire and motivation to participate, not forced on them by their parents.

Austin narrates the documentary, Sports Kids Moms & Dads, which premieres June 1 on the Bravo network.
