According to addiction researcher Doug Thorburn, hardcore football obsession could be linked to alcoholism.
That’s because any extreme behavior – like needing to catch every game or constantly check stats for fantasy football – is likely a sign of alcoholism or an underlying substance abuse problem.
Thorburn says fans who are “out of control” with their gridiron interests could be children of alcoholics with a tendency to overdo things.
Their need to obsess over football is simply a “reaction” to their upbringing and family history.
Signs that they may be addicted to football, booze, or both include changes in behavior like verbally abusing loved ones.
Thorburn says addicts also like to talk on the phone a lot because it gives them a feeling of being able to control people when they can’t control themselves.
