Gay Americans Hit Hard By Economic Crisis

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – If you think the economic crisis is affecting your life, try being gay in this recession.

Today (Aug. 13), the LGTB-themed Logo network premieres 365Gay News: Money Matters, a look at the current financial obstacles faced by the LGTB community.

The four major areas affected in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities are jobs, family life/relationships, gay-owned businesses, and the budgets of HIV/AIDS groups.

For instance, since the job market is so unstable, many gays are forced to stay in the closet for fear of workplace discrimination.

Since gay marriage isn’t state sanctioned everywhere, many legally married couples can’t access the financial benefits of marriage because the federal government doesn’t recognize their union.

Finally, with states like California facing severe money woes, HIV prevention programs have had to take cuts to their budgets as a result of the recession.
