‘American Idol’ Bandleader In Tune With Past Contestants

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – American Idol bandleader Rickey Minor maintains a major role in the careers of former contestants.

Minor believes it’s important to mentor the next generation of musicians so he’s happy to be a sounding board for Idol alumni like Fantasia Barrino, Elliot Yamin, and Bo Bice.

In his words, “It’s important to talk with people who’ve been where you want to go.”

He’s proud that last year’s finalists Carly Smithson and Michael Johns keep in touch regularly to pick his brain about things like contracts.

Minor says Constantine Maroulis and Taylor Hicks have also taken his advice, which is why they’ve both branched out into acting rather than just sticking to music.

He adds, “It’s important to diversify.”

Minor isn’t content just giving advice to Idol contestants. That’s why he’s written a new book, There’s No Traffic On The Extra Mile: Lessons On The Road From Dream To Destiny (Gotham Books).
