Kevin Donaker-Ring, president of the Academic Foundation for International Cultural Exchange, says hes been flooded with applications from foreign students ever since Obamas victory this past November.
However, there is a shortage of host families and he worries that some people are giving up a great opportunity to instill positive American values out of needless terrorism fears and the economic worries of another mouth to feed.
He also admits Wilmer Valderramas foreign exchange student character in That 70s Show hasnt helped either.
Donaker-Ring believes that if Obama emphasizes the positive effects foreign exchange programs have on promoting good relationships with Americans and their international counterparts, more host families will sign up.
Another plus is that many of the teens who participate in the programs are excellent students and can help American students in subjects like math or science.
