Bodies Will Roll At Coffin Races

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Manitou Springs, Colorado, hosts an annual contest that could wake the dead – literally!

This Saturday (Oct. 25), the 14th Annual Emma Crawford Memorial Coffin Race is rolling into town, where more than 40 creepy caskets will race in honor of the area’s most famous resident, Emma Crawford.

Back in the 1800s, Crawford was laid to rest atop a local mountain which later crumbled, sending her remains sailing down the rocky slope.

Now folks send decorated coffins sailing down the street with a person dressed up an Emma inside in her memory.

According to contest spokesman Floyd O’Neil, the four people on the standard racing teams sometimes find themselves with a fifth member: Crawford’s ghost.

He explains, “Her presence is definitely felt. Strange things happen leading up to the race.”

He thinks Crawford just gets excited that the town still thinks of her and is rooting on the contestants from beyond her coffin.
