Artist Chats With His Homemade Robots

TAHOE CITY, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One artist is using old typewriters to build a fleet of robot friends.

Instead of clicking away on old typewriters, Jeremy Mayer uses them to create life-size sculptures of robot-looking humans, and is slated to premiere his entire collection in the summer of 2009.

Mayer says his femme-bots are often inspired by the women in his life, like his mom and girlfriend, and become like good friends to him.

He explains, “I definitely start to treat them like people and have long conversations with them. I’ll tell them ‘Wow, look at you’ or ‘You f■■ker’ when I stab myself on them.”

He’s even taken to naming his creations, mainly to save them from a stupid moniker.

Mayer says, “The people who have bought them usually make up a name, like Woody. I’ve gotten in the habit of naming them myself so someone doesn’t name it something I hate, like Jill.”
