The Mashed Potato Wrestling competition has food fighters brawling in a giant pool of mashed potatoes as part of the Barnesville Potato Days, happening Friday (Aug. 22) through Saturday (Aug. 23).
According to event director Theresa Olson, wrestlers have a hard time tearing up their tater-loving opponents because its extremely slippery, so having a plan of attack helps.
She says, Many teams have their own secret strategy to win, but for the most part its just a free for all. By the time theyre done, it doesnt matter either way. Everyones got mashed potatoes in places you wouldnt imagine them being in.
Though mashed potatoes are being gobbled up at the fest, Olson doesnt advise anyone to grab a spoonful of spuds from the wrestling ring.
She says, We dont make it to taste good. You dont want to take a bowl and add gravy to it, especially after people have been rolling around in it.
