Mashed Potatoes For Wrestling, Not Eating

BARNESVILLE, Minn. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Folks in Barnesville, Minnesota, are dishing out a beat down in mashed potatoes.

The Mashed Potato Wrestling competition has food fighters brawling in a giant pool of mashed potatoes as part of the Barnesville Potato Days, happening Friday (Aug. 22) through Saturday (Aug. 23).

According to event director Theresa Olson, wrestlers have a hard time tearing up their tater-loving opponents because it’s extremely slippery, so having a plan of attack helps.

She says, “Many teams have their own secret strategy to win, but for the most part it’s just a free for all. By the time they’re done, it doesn’t matter either way. Everyone’s got mashed potatoes in places you wouldn’t imagine them being in.”

Though mashed potatoes are being gobbled up at the fest, Olson doesn’t advise anyone to grab a spoonful of spuds from the wrestling ring.

She says, “We don’t make it to taste good. You don’t want to take a bowl and add gravy to it, especially after people have been rolling around in it.”
