Its getting fruity at the University of California, San Diego, today (Jun. 4) for the 43rd Annual Watermelon Queen Pageant, in which girls and guys compete for the crown.
Spokesperson Janice Lew says, We usually have more guys than girls competing. Random guys will come out of the woodwork. They have to use a plastic table cloth to make a dress. I wonder if guys get into it because they like to dress in watermelon- themed drag?
Contestants must show off their skills in a talent portion and prove their seedy smarts by answering watermelon trivia to win the title.
The chosen queen then becomes the honorary melon dropper for UCSDs famous Watermelon Drop, happening this Friday (Jun. 6), in which a giant watermelon is thrown off a seven-story building on campus.
