In What I Really Want to Do On Set in Hollywood: A Guide to Real Jobs in the Film Industry (Lone Eagle) author Brian Dzyak details the often grueling, gritty life of the behind-the- scenes jobs on a Tinseltown set.
Dzyak the cameraman for We Are Marshall, Wanted, and Evan Almighty among other films says, You work 20-hour days. You dont have a life. People lose marriages and friends.
Occasionally, working on a set can be glamorous almost.
Dzyaks work has taken him around the world, from Dubai to China, but he adds, I also spent a night under a freeway bridge for The Fast and the Furious 4. Thats not glamorous.
Although its possible to go from obscure to Oscar-worthy director Tim Burton started out as a crewperson Dzyak says most workers from dolly grips to makeup artists are passionate about their position, and dont dream of big-screen stardom.
What I Really Want comes out May 27.
