Quinceanera Goes Down In South Philly

PHILADELPHIA (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The City Of Brotherly Love is heading south of the border for a once-in-a-lifetime fiesta.

Alex Torra is the recipient of a Princess Grace Awards directing apprenticeship, and is directing a cabaret theater production called Come To My Awesome Fiesta, It’s Going To Be Awesome, Okay?, which will run in Philadelphia this Friday (May 9) and Saturday (May 10).

Torra’s play explores the wacky world of quinceaneras – extravagant birthday parties traditionally held for 15- year-old Mexican girls – including the over-the-top fashion.

The castmembers will sport big, poofy quinceanera dresses and powder blue tuxes, something Torra is all too familiar with.

Torra, who’s Cuban-American and grew up in Miami, participated in many quinceaneras when he was a teenager, and remembers wearing “horrible outfits” and having to dance with girls he didn’t like during the parties.

He says, “I was very resentful at those quinceaneras. But they’re interesting rituals because so many people are involved.”

Torra hopes to familiarize the East Coast with quinceaneras and leave audiences with a sweet taste in their mouths.

He’ll be serving cake during the show to make audiences feel like they’re at a birthday party and is actively accepting cake donations.
