Food Festival Gets Down To The Nitty Gritty

ST. GEORGE, S.C. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A Southern food festival is getting down to the real nitty gritty.

The 23rd Annual World Grits Festival is coming to Saint George, South Carolina, from April 11-13, giving 40,000 festival- goers the chance to chomp on thousands of pounds of the standard Southern side-dish.

But what really keeps people rolling in isn’t the eating contest or the parade – it’s the messy main event.

In the “Rolling in the Grits” contest, competitors are weighed, then given 10 seconds to roll around in an inflatable swimming pool filled with 700 pounds of grits and collect as much extra weight as they can.

Spokesperson Steve Franks says the competition gets really gritty.

He says, “People shove grits down their pants. Girls get out of the pool looking nine-months pregnant! People have all kinds of strategies.”

With grits taking over the town, Franks isn’t worried anyone will get tired of the tasty treat, and says “If you’ve had grits cooked the right way, you’d want them all the time.”
