In 1971, D.B. Cooper hijacked a jet and is believed to have parachuted into the Washington wilderness, disappearing with $200,000.
Every year since 1974, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the D.B. Cooper Party has filled the tiny town of Aerial, Washington, with strange stories of Coopers money-stealing mission.
The party, which draws about 200 people to Aerial the former search party headquarters features music, raffles, and a look-alike contest, but its the story sharing that gets people talking.
Party spokesperson Dona Elliott says, Nobody can be sure what happened, not even the F.B.I. A lot of people have their story, but theyre afraid to get up in front of people and tell it.
And while Elliott says her favorite tale is one womans belief that Cooper bailed out and was taken in by Ms. Sasquatch, shes skeptical, saying, I think Cooper had it all figured out. He wouldve been awful stupid to bail out in November into the cold water.
