In her book, Get Yours! The Girlfriends Guide to Having Everything You Ever Dreamed of and More (Broadway), Amy DuBois Barnett offers poignant pointers to help women achieve personal and professional success, but it was her own shaky start that gave the book its solid foundation.
Barnett, who is now editor-in-chief of Harpers Bazaar, once quit a finance job to pursue a career in the fashion world, and recalls, I was so unhappy on Wall Street, and for lots of years everyone thought I was crazy taking jobs that offered me less and less money. But I found that the more I do what I love, the happier I am.
Despite her success story, as managing editor of Teen People, Barnett became the first African American woman to head a major magazine she says her confidence didnt always shine so strongly.
She says, I would never say Ive always been confident, but life is the greatest ongoing adventure, and if you expect the best, than thats what youre going to get.
Barnetts book hits shelves September 25.
