Wally Schirra: First Astronaut To Sneak Corned Beef Sandwich Into Space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Astronaut Wally Schirra is in the heavens for good now, but his legend still lives on through corned beef sandwiches.

That’s because the astronaut, who died yesterday (May 3) at the age of 84, was known as a prankster who snuck a corned beef sandwich onto the “Gemini 3” before it took off back in 1965.

However, Schirra didn’t even get to enjoy the deli delight because he gave it to fellow astronaut John Young, who hid it in the left pocket of his spacesuit.

Once the sandwich was discovered in orbit, NASA officials had a cow because nothing is supposed to be taken aboard a spacecraft without their knowledge, prompting a coy Schirra to ask his fellow astronauts, “What are they going to do now?”
