Shirley Jones ‘Sounds’ Off About Julie Andrews

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The Sound Of Music is more than 40 years old and that’s how long Shirley Jones has held a grudge against Julie Andrews.

Back in the 1950s, Jones was the muse for musical duo Rodgers & Hammerstein and starred in two of their musicals onscreen – Oklahoma! in 1955 and Carousel in 1956.

However, Jones didn’t win the role of Maria in The Sound Of Music in 1965 – the part went to Andrews – even though the actress had only starred in two movies at the time.

Says Jones: “That was probably the one big one we both really wanted.”

Although Jones didn’t get the part of Maria, she went on to play Shirley Partridge on The Partridge Family and was one of the nominees at the SAG Awards for her role in the TV movie, Hidden Places.
