‘Chestnuts’ Still Top Holiday Hit

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – “Chestnuts” not only roast on an open fire, the song also rests atop the list of holiday hits.

According to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)” has been the most performed holiday song of the last five years, followed closely by “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”

Other tinsel-oriented tunes in the top five include “Winter Wonderland,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” and “White Christmas.”

Of the tunes making the top 25, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” and “Winter Wonderland” are the oldest – both were written in 1934.

Meanwhile, the No. 23 song, “Do They Know It’s Christmas? (Feed The World),” from 1984, is the newest tune on the list.

Finally, the most successful Christmas song composer is Johnny Marks, who wrote “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” (No. 10); “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” (No. 14); and “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (No. 18).
