Elvis Presley Shook Up Ed Sullivan Audiences 50 Years Ago

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Elvis Presley shook up the frumpy fifties with his dance moves and he has TV host Ed Sullivan to thank.

Elvis made his first appearance on Sullivan’s show 50 years ago and his act was so popular he was asked to come back two more times – even though his gyrating caused quite a controversy.

Now, these three appearances are being celebrated in the new DVD Elvis Presley: The Ed Sullivan Shows, which comes out on Tuesday (Nov. 21).

Producer Andrew Solt says he didn’t edit any of the show’s material because he “wanted to put [Elvis] into the context of the time.”

That means couch potatoes get to see performances by various acrobats and Toby the Dog that wouldn’t fly with today’s audiences.

Says Solt: “The show might have been in black and white but Elvis was in color – he made every other act look dull.”
