Documentary Director Beats Out MTV To Cover America’s Hottest, Hippest Festival

AUSTIN, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The Burning Man festival has grown from an underground oddity into the hippest counterculture event in the United States – no thanks to MTV.

Mike Wilson is the director of Burning Man: Beyond Black Rock, which is available Tuesday (Aug. 1) as the authorized documentary DVD about the annual gathering of weirdos, wack-jobs, artsy-types and outsiders in the Nevada desert.

He says not even media icon-maker MTV is welcome at the uniquely freewheeling and envelope-pushing happening.

In Wilson’s words, “Its organizers are so protective of it, they’re the only festival of their kind that’s told MTV to take a hike.”

And Wilson believes the riots and fires of Woodstock ’99 were predictably un-Burning Man-like.

In his words: “That’s always the result of people who’re ONLY out to make money and could give a s about anything else.”
