Smokey Robinson Sings Standards – But Not In A Standard Way

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Smokey Robinson is the latest celebrity to record a standards album but he insists his CD doesn’t qualify as “standard.”

The album, Timeless Love, features smokey remakes of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Our Love Is Here To Say,” and other songs that were written 60 years ago.

Yet, Robinson says the best compliment he’s received is that his renditions don’t sound like the original versions at all.

He says that’s because he never sings a song the same way twice.

In his words, “I’ve sang ‘Ooh Baby Baby’ ten trillion times in my career – I am not kidding – but, to me, it’s a new song every time.”

Although Robinson doesn’t know what Cole Porter or George Gershwin might think of his slightly unorthodox versions, he says that he “never critiques a performer” who sings one of his songs, preferring to consider it “an honor that they gave up one of their own tunes to do one of mine.”
