Punk Rock Novelist Out-Dorks Salinger and Dynamite

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Frank Portman is best known as the frontman of a punk rock band called The Mr. T Experience, but pity the fool who thinks he can’t write a great nerd book.

Frank Portman has just penned King Dork (Delacorte Press), a novel about an ultra-geeky high school kid named Tom Henderson, who finds intrigue, inspiration and conspiracies galore along with his late father’s copy of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher In The Rye.

Portman jokes that learning to write a nerd novel was similar to the way he learned punk rock. In his words, “If you’ve seen my retarded guitar style on stage, you get some idea of how I create,” and adds, “It’s like stumbling into originality.”

Portman says feeling alienated and nerdy is something most high school kids can relate to, but that his book’s protagonist is truly dweeb royalty.

In fact, Portman insists his main character is “even dorkier than Napoleon Dynamite,” adding: “Napoleon actually has it goin’ on compared to my main character.”
