Junior High Teacher Vies for Top Donkey Kong Banana

KIRKWOOD, Wash. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A seventh and eighth grade science teacher in Kirkwood, Washington, rejects the theory of evolution – at least when it comes to video games.

Steve Wiebe is the current reigning champion of Donkey Kong and he says he prefers the “big picture” of grid-based, classic video games like Donkey Kong, to today’s generation of “first person shooter”-type games.

Wiebe will be defending his title this weekend (Apr. 6-9) at the “Who’s the Toughest Gun in the Dodge City of Video Games,” a tournament taking place in Pompano Beach, Florida.

He’s taking the event very seriously by training in both “progressive” sessions – which means going for the highest possible score – and “skills” practice – or, as Wiebe puts it: “Simply jumping over barrels or using new patterns on the ladders.”

Along the way, he’s made sure to educate his students about his Kong quest and admits, “It definitely ups my ‘cool quotient.”’
