O, Say Can’t You Sing The National Anthem

MIAMI (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A lot of Americans don’t know the words to the national anthem and that’s ringing a sour note with some musically-minded citizens.

The group is called the National Anthem Project, a year-long effort dedicated to teaching the lyrics and melody of “The Star-Spangled Banner” to all Americans.

Spokesman John Mahlmann says the organization was inspired by a survey revealing that 66 percent of Americans don’t know the lyrics to the anthem.

Even worse: The people who do sing it at events often perform interpretations that completely ignore the song’s melody or message.

Mahlmann says the lack of music education in schools is the culprit because, as he puts it, “That’s where kids learn these patriotic songs.”

Some people argue the Anthem is too difficult to sing. Mahlmann admits it is “challenging but that’s why we have music educators.”

Mahlmann is taking the project on a 50-city tour and his ultimate goal is to convince the NFL to stop hiring celebrities to sing the Anthem at the Super Bowl but “to have everyone singing it together. Both in the stadium and at home.”
