Word Of The Year: ‘Pandemic’

LEWISBURG, Penn. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A “pandemic” sounds unspeakably terrible but a lot of people were saying the word this year.

That’s why it’s been chosen “Top Word of 2005,” by the Lexiteria, a customer dictionary and word list creator, beating out words like “hurricane” “dumpster-diving,” and “vegan.”

Company president Dr. Robert Beard says “pandemic” has been around for a while but became “the word” because it applied to so many events – hurricanes, terrorism and avian flu.

In fact, Beard believes it has replaced the less specific term “epidemic” among journalists.

Beard says the other words had merit but believes in being conservative about word selection – and he has good reason. A few years back The Lexiteria ranked “bling bling” as one of its top words and “now it’s falling out of usage.”
