Olympic-Bound Female Hockey Player Explains Why Teammates Have All Their Teeth

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Hockey is full of cliches such as big brawls, bad hair and missing teeth, but one female player is saying the women’s league is a whole different “puckgame.”

Angela Ruggiero – a two-time Olympian who is headed for the 2006 games in Torino, Italy, in February – explains that there is no “checking” in women’s hockey, calling it a “skill-based sport as opposed to a sized-based sport.”

But more importantly, she says, “We have full face masks so we have all our teeth.”

Ruggiero busts all myths of black eyes and brawling in her league, saying that international players are very sportsmanlike.

As she puts it, “That’s kind of stupid to fight during the Olympics.”

In her new book, Breaking The Ice (Drummond), Ruggiero reveals she was involved in ONE fight with a guy during a pick-up game after he grabbed her shirt.

She held her own, but is not necessarily proud of the fight, admitting, “That was kind of bad.”
