Doctor Fears Fear Is Affecting Americans’ Health

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Americans are fearing a lot more than fear itself these days, and one physician claims it’s taking a toll on everyone’s health.

Dr. Marc Siegel, author of the new book False Alarm (Wiley), believes that following Sept. 11, the U.S. has been in a state of constant fear, and the fear is causing some folks to develop ailments like heart disease, cancer and obesity to name a few.

Siegel says the media is responsible for stoking the fear by hyping up unlikely threats such as “Weapons of Mass Destruction,” SARS and mad cow disease.

He says he even tried to find respite from the news by watching the Cartoon Network but heard a reference of WMDs on an episode of the cartoon, Hey, Arnold.

Siegel says he knows the remedy: Besides recognizing the problem and avoiding the media, he suggests seeking advice from a doctor or pharmacist before listening to TV experts and also practice better sleeping, eating and exercise habits.
