State Of Comedy No Laughing Matter To Sid Caesar

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The current state of comedy is no laughing matter to Sid Caesar, who says he can’t stand a lot of what gets yucks these days.

Caesar, who was one of the biggest comedy stars in the 1950s thanks to shows like Your Show Of Shows and Caesar’s Hour, says the stuff that is supposed to be funny in TV and movies is “so outlandish. Kids doing rude things with pies.”

In his words, “It’s being outrageous for the sake of being outrageous. I can’t watch it. It turns me off.”

One of the reasons why today’s comedy can’t match up to his standard is the reliance on technology to cover up goofs and flubs.

As he puts it, “A lot of writers ask me, ‘How long did it take you to film the hour-and-a-half show?’ I say, ‘Oh about 90 minutes.’”

Caesar may not like the current batch of comedy but instead of getting mad, he’s offering an alternative in the form of a DVD retrospective, The Sid Caesar Collection: 50th Anniversary Edition, which hits stores today (Jun. 28).
