Organizers of the Ripleys Talk Like A Pirate Contest are looking for men, women and children to deliver their best pirate impersonation in exchange for a bounty of booty.
Ripleys spokesman Tim OBrien says interest has already been amazing, because as he puts it, Its weird. Its unusual. Hell, its Ripleys.
The first round takes place at the San Francisco Ripleys Believe It or Not! museum on June 18. Other contests will be held in San Antonio, Texas, on June 25, and in Gatlinburg, Tenn., on July 2. At each event, a treasure trove of $1,800 will be given away.
If all goes well, the contest will become an annual event across the U.S. with national finals in Los Angeles.
Although pirates were the trash-talking seamen of their day, OBrien warns contestants not to use too much salty talk, saying, Remember, its a family event.
