According to Stooge historian Paul Gierucki, head Stooge Moe Howard was a talented Shakespearean actor who loved the Bards tragedies, while Larry Fine was a trained concert violinist.
Gierucki says it takes a smart person to play stupid but many of the comedy troupes biggest fans didnt realize this and assumed the Stooges beat each other up all the time.
As he puts it, It was common for fans to attempt eye pokes, nose grabs or whack them with sticks in public.
Not that the Stooges were completely harmless. Gierucki says the groups infamous eye poke was based on a real-life incident when Curly caught Larry cheating at cards and poked him out of anger.
In his words, Moe laughed so hard that he fell through a plate glass window and decided to put it in the act.
Gierucki reveals other Stooge secrets in a new DVD, Stooges: The Men Behind The Mayhem, which just hit stores.
