Sam The Koala became an Aussie symbol of hope after surviving devastating fires earlier this year. She was photographed holding hands with a firefighter as he gave her water.
Last week, Sam passed away and animal behavior consultant Diana Guerrero says grieving is crucial for those who loved the koala.
She suggests Sams caretakers create a website where the public can openly express their feelings over the animals death.
Sams fans should channel their grief toward a greater good, like helping other koalas through rehabilitation programs.
Guerrero says remembering the endearing things about Sam will also help folks heal.
The Melbourne Museum has offered to preserve Sam by stuffing her, but Guerrero thinks this could counter the letting go process.
Shes the author of Blessings Of The Animals (Sterling), which features different rituals for pets, from Bark-Mitzvahs to burials.
