‘Web 2.0’ Declared One Millionth Word In English

AUSTIN, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The English language just hit the millionth word mark, and the landmark word beat out some doozies.

The one millionth word according to The Global Language Monitor is “Web 2.0” – the next generation of Web products and services – which was officially added to the English language last week.

It met the criteria of having a minimum of 25,000 citations and vast geographic distribution and triumphed over words like the Hindi phrase “Jai Ho!” for the 1,000,000th spot.

Other popular words that almost made the cut include...

  • “Slumdog,” a formerly disparaging, now often endearing term for those residing in the slums of India.

  • “Octo-Mom,” octuplet mom Nadya Suleman.

  • “Greenwashing,” rebranding an old product as environmentally friendly.

  • “Sexting,” sending sexy text messages.

  • “Defriend,” the social network terminology for cutting the connection with a former friend.

  • “Recessionista,” a fashion savvy person who uses the global economic restructuring to their financial benefit.
