Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is tomorrow (Nov. 1), and calls for observers of the traditional Mexican holiday to honor their departed loved ones.
A big part of the celebration is building an alter as a remembrance to those lost souls, which Loera says are typically decorated with sugar skulls, the dead persons favorite meal, and soap and water so the departed can freshen up after their long journey from beyond.
Though most people honor family, many celebrate dead celebrities, and sometimes dress up like them in tribute.
Loera laughs, I once saw a man in drag dressed up like the salsa singer Celia Cruz. He looked exactly like her too!
Furry family members arent kept out of the festivities either.
Loera says, You can celebrate any death you want. I built my altar last year for my pets that have died. Some people thought that was weird.
