Water Warriors Think Inside The Box

TEMPE, Ariz. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A wacky river race in Tempe, Arizona, has competitors thinking inside the box – literally.

This Saturday (Apr. 19) is the Rotary River Rally, a fundraising weekend featuring the 9th Annual Great Cardboard Box Regatta, in which racers sail nearly 100 boats made entirely of cardboard down a 200-yard course.

Spokesperson Kathleen Toupkin says the real fun comes with seeing racers’ crazy cardboard concoctions, which have included floating islands, stage coaches, and even a 40-foot Viking ship with eight men.

She says, “The Viking ship was amazing, and the floating island was great, but it went in circles when they paddled!”

While the winner sails away with a trophy, awards are also given for “Best Dressed,” “Most Spirited,” and even the “Titanic Award” for most spectacular sinking.

But sailors don’t have to drown their sinking sorrows – all entry fees go directly to children’s charities.
