Michigan Man Turns Trash Into Treasure

MARQUETTE, Mich. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A man in Marquette, Michigan, is turning junk into works of art.

Tom Lakenen has built more than 60 large sculptures out of iron and scrap pieces he’s picked up from junk yards, which he now displays on an open piece of land he calls Lakenenland.

Lakenen started making his mammoth figures 12 years ago after he quit drinking and, as he says, “needed something to do instead of going to bars.”

Among the pieces he’s created are iron lumberjacks, a steel pipe owl in a nest, and a statue of a pig, which Lakenen describes as, “a corporate greed pig pooping on the working man.”

Lakenen uses his experience as a welder to build his trash treasures, but even with expertise and experience, Lakenen likes to keep things simple.

He says, “I just look at whatever I’ve got, and think what I can make out of it.”
