The House Rabbit Society (H.R.S.) is hoping to save bunnies with their Make Mine Chocolate campaign, in which they encourage people to buy chocolate or stuffed bunnies as Easter gifts instead of real rabbits to ensure they dont end up neglected or abandoned.
According to Linda Howard, chapter manager of the Alabama H.R.S., most people dont know what theyre getting themselves into when they buy a real live rabbit.
She explains, The soft, cuddly little baby bunnies become teenagers within a few months. Thats when they begin spraying, biting, growling, and boxing at you. They take their front paws and just dig at you.
Howard says that these crazy behaviors go away if rabbits are neutered or spayed, but most people dont realize thats an option.
Instead, owners end up releasing them into the wild or sending them to shelters, where they will most likely be euthanized.
