Nobody Puts Ukulele In The Corner

HONOLULU, Hawaii (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One maverick musician is taking the ukelele off the islands and onto center stage.

Jake Shimabukuro is a virtuoso ukulele player who’s toured with Jimmy Buffet and banjo badass Bela Fleck, but now the master musician is wowing audiences all by himself.

Shimabukuro is touring solo, and says, “It’s a challenge to carry a whole show, but I enjoy it because it forces me to be creative.”

And there’s another advantage to Shimabukuro strumming a song on a solo stage.

He says, “People’s expectations are generally pretty low – anything I do that’s outside of the box, they’re impressed!”

His new album, My Life, features Shimabukuro rockin’ rad covers of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and – listen to this – Cyndi Lauper all on a ukelele.

Shimabukuro explains, “I like cover songs because for an audience unfamiliar with the ukulele, it helps me connect with people quicker.”

Shimabukuro’s album, My Life, comes out September.
