‘Mermaids’ Actress Doesn’t Take Pointers From Cher

TEMECULA, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The classic 90’s film Mermaids is now a musical, but one theater actress doesn’t “believe” in taking pointers from the film’s original star Cher.

Actress Tane McClure – best known as Reese Witherspoon’s mom on Legally Blonde – is starring as Rachael Flax in a theater production of Mermaids which opens in Temecula, California, Thursday (May 10).

McClure is excited about reprising the role originally made famous by the diva-licious star, but admits she didn’t do her Cher homework when it came to preparing for the role.

Says McClure: “I love the film Mermaids, and I love Cher, but when I got the part I purposely didn’t watch the movie or Cher-related stuff because I was afraid of becoming just another impersonator. I didn’t want to mimic Cher, I wanted to play the role my way.”

And while McClure didn’t take to Cher’s mannerisms and singing style, she’s thankful the disco darling gave her such a “solid original character” to live up to in the stage show.

She adds, “I’d love to meet Cher and make her proud of our new version of Mermaids.
