Comedy Groups Are The New Garage Bands

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – It’s no joke: Comedy groups are the latest garage bands.

That’s the serious opinion of playwright/ actress Diz White, author of The Comedy Group Book (Smith And Kraus), a how-to manual for folks who want to earn laughs for a living.

White says the popularity of websites like YouTube has made it easier than ever for funny folks to make a career out of their senses of humor.

As she puts it, “Before [the internet], you had to be seen by an agent in order to get work. Now, you just need a camcorder and you can get on YouTube and be seen by millions. And the people who make the most popular videos are getting deals.”

But before you begin making laughs, there is some serious work.

White says any person who wants to start a comedy group has to have a desire to make people want to laugh, but be willing to write for yourself because, in her words, “You can’t second-guess an audience.”

Finally, White says any aspiring comedy troop should learn that words with a “K” sound like “chicken” and “pickle” are always funny.
