Indie Rockers Declare America Beautiful

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The classic rock band America is getting ready to release its first major label studio album in 20 years – and they have some of the country’s most highly-regarded indie rockers to thank.

The CD, Here & Now, was produced by Fountains Of Wayne leader Adam Schlesinger and former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and features guest performances by Ryan Adams, and members of Nada Surf and My Morning Jacket.

The idea started after America bass player Gerry Beckley and Schlesinger started e-mailing each other tracks of their favorite new bands.

At first, Beckley feared the album would turn into a “duets thing” instead of a contemporary album.

He needn’t have worried.

That’s because Schlesinger and Iha insisted Beckley play bass on most of the records “because I played on all the original America tracks.”

Even better: Beckley is happy that none of the guest musicians “needed any arm twisting to appear.”

Here & Now hits stores January 16.
