Festival organizer Brenda Rubio says the traditional festival is held each year to honor the slithering snakes that have always been a part of the Texan landscape.
Highlights of the festival include a Rattlesnake Run, where people participate in a 5K marathon race and a Snake Show, which offers the public safety tips on rattlers.
But Rubio says the real highlight of the weekend is the gopher races, where mechanical gophers are pulled with a string toward the finish line and the winner receives a special rattlesnake trophy.
While festival-goers are encouraged to sport their best Western wear, Rubio says you wont catch folks wearing snakeskin boots out of respect for the snakes.
