The 30th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships start tomorrow (Aug. 26) and more than 300 bodysurfers from as far away as England and Brazil will be competing to make the biggest splash in the sport.
For those not in the know, bodysurfing is much like board surfing, except the surfer doesnt use a board.
Former champion Tim Cassinelli says the competing bodysurfers are graded on style but admits its difficult for judges because much of the best moves are done underwater.
Cassinelli admits bodysurfing doesnt get as much publicity as board surfing because, he points out, There are no accessories needed, so there is no money in it for sponsors.
Still, he figures the lack of lucre benefits the sport by keeping the family atmosphere.
But he cant help but admit he is disappointed his beloved bodysurfing doesnt get more attention.
As he puts it, Sometimes I watch poker and wonder why bodysurfing isnt on TV. Come on, pokers not a sport.
