Bodysurfing Competition Making Waves This Weekend

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Some of the world’s best bodysurfers will be making waves in Oceanside, California, this weekend.

The 30th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships start tomorrow (Aug. 26) and more than 300 bodysurfers from as far away as England and Brazil will be competing to make the biggest splash in the sport.

For those not in the know, bodysurfing is much like board surfing, except the surfer doesn’t use a board.

Former champion Tim Cassinelli says the competing bodysurfers are graded on style but admits it’s difficult for judges because much of the best moves are done underwater.

Cassinelli admits bodysurfing doesn’t get as much publicity as board surfing because, he points out, “There are no accessories needed, so there is no money in it for sponsors.”

Still, he figures the lack of lucre benefits the sport by keeping the family atmosphere.

But he can’t help but admit he is disappointed his beloved bodysurfing doesn’t get more attention.

As he puts it, “Sometimes I watch poker and wonder why bodysurfing isn’t on TV. Come on, poker’s not a sport.”
