MTV Turns 25 Today (Aug. 1)

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – MTV turns 25 today (Aug. 1) and although the network is older than its demographic, it’s still going strong.

  • The first video ever broadcast on the channel was “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles.

  • Madonna’s 1989 video “Like A Prayer” – which featured burning crosses and a Black Jesus – was recently named the No. 1 video that broke the rules.

  • George Bush Sr.’s refusal to appear on MTV’s Choose Or Lose was widely credited as the deciding factor to swing Generation X voters in favor of Bill Clinton’s 1992 Presidential election.

  • Jenny McCarthy almost didn’t get her big break as the co-host on the dating show Singled Out – the morning of taping she narrowly escaped a hotel room fire started by a candle she left on her electric rollers.

  • Finally, of all the mystifying pop moments on the network’s live awards broadcasts, the topper may be the time when ultra-mopy diva Fiona Apple revealed to the an MTV Movie Awards audience that, “This world is bulls■■■.”
