Miss Crustacean Pageant In Ocean City, New Jersey Has Everyone Crazy For Crabs

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Everyone will be crabby in Ocean City, New Jersey, when the 31st Annual Miss Crustacean hermit crab beauty contest and races take place next Wednesday (Aug. 2).

Pinching their way towards the crown in this event, crabs of all shapes and sizes vie for the coveted title of Miss Crustacean, and although it is “Miss” crustacean – gender doesn’t matter in this beauty pageant.

Event organizer Mark Soifer says past winners have included “Crabapatra,” who was carried in by toga-clad owners; “Copa Crabana”; and “Crabpunsel,” who showed up complete with flowing locks of hair.

The crusty winner of the beauty contest is escorted down a runway and might get teary-eyed as the crowd sings – what else – “Here comes Miss Crustacean.”

Other events that will please even the crabbiest crab louie include the intense Cucumber Rind-Cup Race, where about 200 crabs race one another.

In 1977, the crab record was set at 6.3 seconds by the dearly departed “Hermey” who as Soifer puts it, “Continues to be an inspiration to crab athletes everywhere.”

This year will also feature a crab wrestling event, where “sumo crabs” will be put on their backs and the first one to get back on its feet wins.
