Gay Marriage Activist Refuses To Pay Taxes In Protest

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One gay activist is saying “No marriage, no taxes.”

Seventy-one-year-old Charles Merrill of Hendersonville, North Carolina, is thumbing his nose at the IRS and state tax board by refusing to pay his income taxes this year because he can’t marry a man.

It’s not a small chunk of change he’s talking about either. Merrill says he made $2.3 million in stock sales last year.

Merrill, who says he was married for 23 years until his wife died in 1990, knows the tax benefits married people get.

Now that he has been in a gay relationship for 15 years, he says, “It’s unfair for President Bush not to consider two people in love” as candidates for marriage.

Merrill says he’s prepared to take the punishment for not paying taxes – one year in prison.

He says he feels it’s his “karmic duty” to do it because he acknowledges, “Young men in jobs can’t do what I’m doing.”
