Urban Talent Search Beat ‘American Idol’ By Ten Years

DETROIT (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – American Idol might be the best known reality show talent search, but it’s by no means the first.

At least according to Los Angeles-based filmmaker Damien Earl Matthias, who worked on a project back in 1994 which was an urban version of American Idol, without Simon Cowell.

Back then Matthias conducted a talent search and is now releasing the results in a new documentary, Blunts And Stunts: Class Of 1994, that debuts at a theater tonight (Jan. 5) in Detroit, the site of the original search.

Since then, some of the participants have gone on to real careers on MTV, but there were also plenty of William Hung-type contestants such as the self-proclaimed sex symbol who Matthias says carried on “like Tom Jones, except he couldn’t sing.”

Matthias will show the film next month in Los Angeles before taking it on tour, and hopes to conduct a new talent search in each city.
