Toto Guitarist Gets ‘SantaMental’ Over Sammy Davis, Jr.

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Sammy Davis, Jr. may have died 15 years ago but that’s not stopping him from doing duets with Toto guitarist Steve Lukather.

The guitar wizard just released his first Christmas CD, SantaMental, and while it’s mostly instrumental, Lukather decided to sample Davis’ voice for a rendition of “Jingle Bells.”

Lukather has been a lifelong Sammy fan – and even owns the entertainer’s golf clubs – so he made sure to check with the entertainer’s estate to ensure they felt he could do justice to the song.

As he puts it, “It’s like a Vegas version of me and him singing together. I tried to be true to his spirit.”

Lukather is happy with the final result and feels that if Sammy were still alive “we’d be hanging out together.”

Meanwhile, the Candy Man isn’t the only musician who helped out on SantaMental. Lukather also called in favors with Steve Vai, Slash and convinced Eddie Van Halen to duet on “Joy To The World.”
