Thats the opinion voiced by Pamela Adlon, who does the voice of Bobby Hill on the long-running Fox comedy, King Of The Hill.
She says doing voiceover work is different than other types of acting because, you have no time to prepare. When you do a play or a film, you can read up on a role or work with a coach, but doing voiceovers you have to fly by the seat of your pants.
That approach has worked for Adlon, who says she was cast as Bobby by a combination of luck and the fact she has a good ear for voices.
As she puts it, You cant just give a flat read, you have to add color and variation to the words.
Of course, some parts require a lot less. She recently recorded voices for toys and admits she had to do retakes because the producers felt she was putting more texture than could fit on a computer chip.
Adlon is currently working on King Of The Hill but she will also be heard in Squirrel Boy, a new animated series debuting next summer on the Cartoon Network.
