‘Gospel According to Oprah’ Shows Talk Show Host On A Holy Roll

CHICAGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A lot of women worship the ground Oprah Winfrey walks on, and one author has a revelation why.

Marcia Z. Nelson has written The Gospel According to Oprah (Westminster John Knox) to explore the religious themes including “confession, redemption, healing, mission, forgiveness and salvation” which are regular parts of Oprah’s talk show.

Those themes, while broad, have their roots in religious background, and while Oprah herself isn’t overtly religious, she frequently has gospel singers or other guests on her show who will talk about their relationship with God or how they learned to forgive others.

Nelson also says Oprah presents herself as a listener, which she compares with listening to confessions.

And when it comes to tithing, Nelson says Oprah’s very generous, quoting a BusinessWeek article which estimated in 2004 her lifetime givings stood at $175 million.
