Marcia Z. Nelson has written The Gospel According to Oprah (Westminster John Knox) to explore the religious themes including confession, redemption, healing, mission, forgiveness and salvation which are regular parts of Oprahs talk show.
Those themes, while broad, have their roots in religious background, and while Oprah herself isnt overtly religious, she frequently has gospel singers or other guests on her show who will talk about their relationship with God or how they learned to forgive others.
Nelson also says Oprah presents herself as a listener, which she compares with listening to confessions.
And when it comes to tithing, Nelson says Oprahs very generous, quoting a BusinessWeek article which estimated in 2004 her lifetime givings stood at $175 million.
