Martika Soldiers On 16 Years After ‘Toy Soldiers’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Pop singer Martika is best known for her 1989 No. 1 hit, “Toy Soldiers,” but she’s still soldiering on 16 years later.

In fact, she’s in a new duo, Oppera, with boyfriend Michael Mozart and they’re about to release a self-titled CD that she says is 180 degrees away from her old music.

Martika – who turns 36 tomorrow (May 18) – says Oppera’s music shares some characteristics with the other kind of opera because, as she puts it, “We can be as over the top, theatrical, dramatic and pompous as we like.”

Luckily, she says Mozart handles much of the music and lyrics so she gets “to lay out by the pool while he works.”

Oppera will release its debut CD May 31 and Martika is hoping to attract fans of songs like “Toy Soldiers,” but admits she probably won’t play the song in shows “even if some drunk is yelling for it.”

But that won’t be easy since Eminem sampled her hit for his song, “Like Toy Soldiers” last year and turned into a hit all over again.
