Bob Costas: ‘Steroids Hurt Statistics’

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Bob Costas says the worst thing about Major League Baseball’s steroids scandal is how it will affect one of the best things about the game: The way fans compare the abilities of players of different eras.

As Costas puts it, “No one says, ‘Do you think Red Grange was as good as Barry Sanders?’ But they compare Joe DiMaggio to Ken Griffey, Jr.”

He fears the steroid hubbub will force fans to make “calibrations in their own minds” when comparing Barry Bonds to Babe Ruth – and that won’t be as much fun.

Despite that, Costas says baseball “will bounce back because it always has.”

Costas has retooled his HBO sports show, now called Costas Now, and the first episode airs tomorrow (May 13).
